Did You Know? Oregon's Defensible Space Law

Property owners in Lane County, OR must clear 30-100ft of space around their home for wildfire protection

In order to improve your home’s chance of surviving a wildfire, it is essential to create a defensible space. This space is a buffer between your home, building, or property and the grass, trees, shrubs, and any woodland area surrounding it. This space is important for keeping wildfire from spreading onto your home. There are two zones which make up the defensible space, Zone 1 and Zone 2. Zone 1 is the 30-foot radius around your home that requires you to remove any dead plants, grass, and vegetation. For this, you must relocate your wood piles to Zone 2, which is the 100-foot distance from your home. In this second zone, be sure to cut or mow grass down to a maximum height of 4 inches and remove any fallen leaves, needles, twigs, bark, etc.

*Please check with your local fire department for any additional information needed for defensible space in your area.
